Traveling to Boracay? Choosing between a flight to Kalibo or Caticlan? Only small (jet propelled or turborop) planes land in Caticlan. On January 11, one of these small planes crash-landed at the Caticlan airport.

Zest Air (Asian Spirit) plane crash in Caticlan airportMy husband was in Boracay last week, saw the plane at the Caticlan airport (he flew via Cebu Pacific) and took the photo above. The logo had been removed (perhaps so people won’t know to which airline it belongs?) but a search for “plane crash Caticlan” will give you the name of the airline.

From ABS-CBN News:

Three passengers were injured after a Zest Air (formerly Asian Spirit) plane crashed Sunday morning at the Caticlan airport…

Reports said that strong winds caused the aircraft’s landing gear to explode, hitting the barrier of the Caticlan airport at around 6:40 a.m. Sunday. After swerving 180 degrees, the plane was said to have crashed into the airport’s passenger lounge.

The same airline has been involved in several accidents in the past.

In 1999, an Asian Spirit plane crashed mountainous area of Kasibu in Nueva Vizcaya province killing all passengers and crew.

In 2002, an Asian Spirit plane crash-landed in Manila; no one was injured.

Just last year, another Asian Spirit plane crash-landed in Masbate when it overshot the runway and smashed the airstrip fence; no injuries were reported.
